Insurance adjusters went store to store Wednesday to survey the damage caused by a fire that destroyed several businesses in Floral Park on Sunday morning.
The fire destroyed six stores and damaged others along Covert Avenue. Its cause is still under investigation.
Paul Capoziello, the owner of Capo Ristorante, salvaged a photo from what was left of his restaurant.
"My newborn baby, it hurts," he told News 12. "It's like losing a part of my life that I’ve worked incredibly hard for."
Capoziello says the future is uncertain, but the community’s outpouring of support has been inspiring. That includes online fundraisers, one of which was organized by the Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce.
Other ways to help can be found on their Facebook page.
Floral Park Mayor Dominick Longobardi says the village is working closely with the business owners to help get them back open as soon as possible. They are considering setting up shops in tents for the time being and allowing restaurants to run food trucks in the parking lots while they rebuild.
