A senior at Plainedge High School was killed in a vehicle crash Tuesday, according to a statement from the district.
The superintendent of the Plainedge Union Free School District has identified the student as senior Dylan Nuccio.
Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Nuccio, of Farmingdale, was the 17-year-old killed in a crash in North Massapequa.
Police confirm that they found a Nuccio in a vehicle that went off the road and into a tree around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on the ramp to Route 135 North. They say he was pronounced dead at the scene by a police medic.
People within the community brought bouquets of flowers, a cross, candles and balloons to the site of the crash for a makeshift memorial. Nassau County police blocked traffic for some time so people could gather safely.
Meanwhile, the superintendent says the district's crisis intervention team has been activated to help those grieving in the community.
A source tells News 12 that Nuccio was on his lunch break from Plainedge High School when the crash occurred.
The superintendent also announced that high school students are not permitted to leave the school for lunch until further notice.
The teen's family has announced details about when loved ones can say their final goodbyes.
A visitation will be held Friday at the William E. Law Funeral Home in Massapequa from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will take place Saturday at Saint James Roman Catholic Church in Seaford. Following the funeral, Nuccio will be laid to rest at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.
