Head lice is always a worry for parents as kids go back to school, but now students may be dealing with a so-called "super lice" that has reportedly spread to almost every state.
According to a recent study published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, there are types of lice found in the United States that are resistant to the insecticides used in popular over-the-counter products.
Syosset pediatrician Dr. William Mesibov says super lice have not yet been seen on Long Island. He says students can take simple precautions to stop the spread of lice, including not sharing hats or hairbrushes.
Dr. Mesibov suggests parents bring their children to a pediatrician if they have lice. Then, parents can decide to use a professional lice remover or attempt to remove it themselves.
