Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi appointed a new tax assessor Tuesday, who taxpayers say will have a lot of work ahead of him.
Thaddeus ?Ted? Jankowski Jr. is the first appointed tax assessor for Nassau County. In November, voters passed a referendum making that job an appointed one, rather than an elected one. Suozzi says that move took politics out of the process and that he used the opportunity to choose someone with real experience.
In 2003, Nassau revamped its tax assessment system for the first time in decades. Since then, officials say tax assessment challenges have gone through the roof.
Suozzi says he wants to restore the public?s confidence in the assessment system. Jankowski says his priority is to make the process more transparent.
Many taxpayers say that?s a good idea. ?The whole process with how they assess one house to the other is not really clear,? Mark Scaglioli, of Plainview, says. ?Whether it's based on size or property size or square footage it's just not clear what they use.? Scaglioli says the process should be standardized.
The Nassau County Legislature will vote on whether to confirm Jankowski?s appointment at the end of January.
