Association of Community Oranizations for Reform Now (ACORN) members camped out Thursday to call attention to what they say is an affordable housing crisis.
Members of ACORN say Garden City is one of the last holdouts for affordable housing and the only way they can afford to sleep there is in tents. They say minorities are tough to find in the ritzy area. The group wants county officials to step in and rectify the situation.
County Executive Tom Suozzi has proposed building low-cost housing on 11 acres near the Roosevelt Field Mall, but rally members say he is not moving fast enough.
