Across Long Island, residents took advantage of unseasonably warm temperatures and headed to the beaches. Due to the summer-like weather this Columbus Day weekend, the State Parks Department decided to bring back enough lifeguards to officially reopen four beaches. ?I've been working for state parks for 30 years and never have we had lifeguards this late into the fall," said NYS Parks Deputy Director George Gorman.
Despite some early afternoon fog and ocean breezes, beach-goers grabbed their boogie boards, fold-out chairs and sand sculpting tools to relive the lazy days of summer. Many also took a dip since the water temperature is 70 degrees coupled with 80 degree weather.
Through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. residents can hit the waves at Robert Moses Field 5, Jones Beach Field 6, Sunken Meadow Main Beach and Hither Hills in Montauk.
