An undercover operation in Suffolk County put the brakes on some people allegedly looking to sell stolen cars.
Undercover police officers set up a fake chop shop to stop suspected thieves in the act. Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota said the yearlong operation busted 22 people accused of stealing 92 vehicles.
?People stealing cars would come to the sting location and we would be buying the cars from them, ultimately arresting them,? Spota said at a news conference Tuesday.
Spota said the operation put a dent in a growing problem on Long Island. According to the district attorney, more than 2,200 cars were stolen in the county last year. He added that for every car that's stolen, insurance rates are driven up for customers.
?We pay approximately $300 extra in our car policy due to these types of fraud,? Frank Orlando, of the New York Insurance Frauds Bureau, said.
Investigators said they are looking for 15 more suspects.
