School superintendents in Suffolk County say they've created a blueprint for school safety as students are set to return to classes next week.
"The conversation about school safety began long before Parkland," says Dr. Ken Bossert, of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association. "It was really the Columbine tragedy in 1999 that really began the focus on school safety."
Bossert says the association has devised a multipoint plan to address safety that calls a model for school safety. Among the areas of focus is providing support for the emotional and mental health of all students.
Other measures include expanding school resource officer programs, adopting legislation to upgrade safety in schools and providing financial support for those upgrades.
Bossert hopes the plan will help drive the needed legislation and funding for districts.
