A Suffolk County school says it’s no homework policy has been so successful, that the program may be expanded.
The East Quogue Union Free School District recently implemented an initiative called “Family First Wednesdays.” For one Wednesday each month, students in grades K-6 are not given any homework. Instead, they're encouraged to spend time at home with family.
Principal Robert Long says the district has received so much positive feedback that the program may now be expanded to two Wednesdays each month.
“The emphasis is going to be on continuing to support ways that families can do things together,” says Long. “Maybe its social skills homework…We want to foster families being together.”
The School Board is expected to vote on the measure at its meeting on Oct. 16.
