A proposal in the Suffolk County Legislature would allow residents to use sparklers on certain holidays.
The measure would only allow the handheld fireworks to be used for New Year's and the Fourth of July.
Sparklers and other fireworks are currently banned in Suffolk, but legislation enacted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year dropped sparklers from the state's list of dangerous fireworks, clearing the way for counties to make up their own regulations on them.
However, according to Newsday, a number of fire officials are against the idea, arguing that sparklers pose too much of a fire risk.
