Suffolk police are working with cops in Connecticut to ensure 911 calls reach their intended destination.
Volunteer firefighter Rob DiBono recently dialed 911 from his cell phone after watching a man almost drown in Kings Park. Instead of Suffolk police, DiBono says he reached cops in Connecticut. He says three separate phone calls yielded three separate out-of-state police departments.
Suffolk police say because of spotty cell phone service on the north shore, it is not uncommon for local calls to be picked up by Connecticut phone towers. They say they are working with the state Office of Telecommunications in Connecticut to advise all dispatch centers to contact Suffolk County with errant calls.
