A Suffolk police officer has been arrested after his colleagues say he was illegally in possession of steroids.
Officer Steven Lepre was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. Prosecutors say they found more than 1,000 syringes in his East Northport home.
Police say the 13-year veteran had been on extended sick leave and was assigned to the department's medical evaluation section. The 43-year-old has been suspended without pay.
Lepre's stepfather and neighbor say he's been on medical leave for terminal brain cancer and the steroids were part of a desperate attempt to extend his life.
Lepre is due back in court Friday when prosecutors say he could face more charges.
