Suffolk police said a man and a child were found dead inside their home Friday night in West Babylon.
They said the father died by suicide.
An autopsy was being performed as of Saturday night to determined how his 6-year-old daughter died.
Suffolk police said a relative came to the two-story Walker Street home around 5:30 p.m. and inside found the 34-year-old man dead. Nearby, his daughter was found dead as well.
Neighbors said it was the man's wife who found the two inside. They knew something was wrong upon hearing her screams as the police quickly arrived.
"There were so many cop cars and we knew that something happened because they were putting the yellow tape. It didn't take long for them to seal off the entire block," said neighbor Marylin Schmalfuss.
Neighbors said the family rented the home and had at least one other young boy.
They said the man, whom police have yet to identify, seemed to be highly protective of his kids. They said he would always watch them as they played outside.
"They're a very nice family. I always saw the father taking his children, son and daughter, to the bus stop. He wouldn't let them walk alone," Schmalfuss said.
