A boater almost drowned off Port Jefferson Harbor Sunday but was saved by the quick action of some good Samaritans.
Suffolk police say 70-year-old Alan Goldberg, of Coram, was attempting to anchor a boat off Whitehall Beach in Port Jefferson Harbor when he fell and started to drown.
Detectives say that's when Frances George and his father Karl were on their sailboat, saw the man in distress and swam over to help.
The Georges', who both have some lifeguard and medical training, were able to begin CPR while Suffolk Police's Marine Unit responded in a patrol boat.
The Georges' say multiple other boaters and beachgoers also pitched in to help the man.
Suffolk Police's Marine Unit was able to take Goldberg to an awaiting ambulance on shore, where officials say he was taken to St. Charles Hospital.
