The Suffolk DA has organized a grand jury after police arrested 18 Long Island men suspected in an illegal drug and gambling ring.
Prosecutors say about two dozen Nassau and Suffolk men ran the multi-million dollar marijuana and gambling circuit. According to prosecutors, the operation revolved around Stephen Tarnofsky, of Merrick. Salvatore Gerrato, of Seaford, was also among the 14 men arrested in connection with the gambling ring. Four other men were also taken into custody for allegedly trafficking marijuana. Police say they previously seized nine tons of illegal fireworks from Gerrato's home in May.
Prosecutors claim the group took in $165,000 weekly in sports bets and made cross-country journeys in an RV to bring drugs east from California. They say the estimated street value of pot on each run equaled about $1.5 million. A 19th suspect, Freeport lawyer Andrew Petrone, is still on the loose.
