Recruits from Suffolk County police gathered with community members in Hauppauge to join in a workout for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation Sunday afternoon.
Recruits from the latest class from the academy ran the fundraiser event at Hauppauge High School.
"It's beautiful out. It's a good day and doing it for a great reason," said police recruit Lia Brocking. She helped organize her academy class number 21-182 in a group workout for those in the community who signed up.
"It's great, isn't it? We've got recruits, we have their family members, we have some academy staff out here. It's a great day," added recruit Stephen Meszaros.
Entry fees for the workout were donated to the Tunnel To Towers Foundation in memory of city firefighter Stephen Siller who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on Sept. 11. He died at ground zero and the foundation helps those who give back to the community.
Certified personal trainers in the recruit class and the academy ran the workout.
"It's a little intimidating because they are tough, and they're yelling at you to keep going," said Julia Friedman, of Northport.
The recruit class's goal was to raise about $5,000, so they hope to have more donations roll in online.
"We have a whole website that Tunnels to Towers set up for us. There's a QR Code, they take a picture of the QR code, click on the link and they can donate, they can buy t-shirts. Everything is done on that platform," Brocking explained.
