Suffolk police say two North Carolina men are accused of having two crates full of neglected puppies, two loaded guns and a 2-year-old child inside a Jeep Compass in Wyandanch.
Police say stopped the defendants inside the vehicle on Friday night.
According to police, “First Precinct Crime Section officers observed a 2022 Jeep Compass with 19 puppies in two crates, in the parking lot of 301 Merritt Ave. The Pit Bulls were without sufficient air, shelter, food and water. The animals were covered in feces.”
The dogs were taken to local shelters.
Russell Brown, 67, and Jamar Belle, 28, were charged with 19 counts of neglect of an impounded animal, one count of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of criminal possession of a firearm.
Police say they also face endangering the welfare of a child charges since there was a 2-year-old inside the vehicle with the weapons. The child is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Brown and Belle are expected to be arraigned Sunday in Central Islip.
