Top officials with the Suffolk County Police Department today laid out their new approach to fighting crime in the county. Police Chief James Burke spoke before the county Legislature's Public Safety Commission to outline a new vision for the department. He says its top priorities will be battling gang violence and the prescription pill problem on Long Island. Burke says there will also be an increased focus on "intelligence-led" policing, as well as fostering better communication among precincts. He says the department plans to pinpoint patterns in crime across the county and create maps of hot spots and crime trends. This way, Burke says, "We're all going to know who the bad guys are."
