Suffolk PD acquires 6 Humvees to bolster emergency response

The Suffolk County Police Department has some new tools to help officers respond to emergency situations on Long Island.
The department recently acquired six Humvees, which were part of a surplus from the federal government. Officers will be trained on how to properly drive the vehicles, which will be used during snowstorms, roadside rescues and hurricane evacuations.
The Humvees were painted Wednesday by students at Suffolk BOCES Academy.
Suffolk County officials say the vehicles were acquired at very little cost. They hope to acquire more by the end of the year.
