Suffolk lawmakers unanimously passed a measure to ban smoking at apartment complexes.

The bill pertains to any properties that have 10 or more units - such as apartment buildings, condo complexes and senior facilities. It states that smoking would be prohibited in all common spaces inside and out -- including hallways, playgrounds, courtyards and swimming pools.

Smoking would also be prohibited within 50 feet of an entrance or any ventilation intake to a building.

Legislator Monica Martinez (D - Central Islip) says she got the idea for the bill after hearing a number of complaints from residents about the problem.

The bill goes into effect 120 days after it was filed. Violators could be fined up to $250.
