Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is telling consumers not to panic after lawmakers let the Friday deadline pass for a county gas tax cap.
Republicans who sponsored the bill in the Legislature say they believe the tax cap to be dead for the summer. However, Levy says he supports the measure and that the county can get a waiver to implement the cap immediately if lawmakers approve it.
Experts estimate the cap would save consumers about 85 cents for 10 gallons of gas. And while Suffolk is expecting a 23 percent jump in revenue from gasoline taxes this year, officials are quick to point out that there is no windfall profit. They say consumers are spending more at the pump, but less everywhere else. This, they say, balances out the overall tax revenue.
