The Suffolk County Legislature passed a controversial worker status bill Tuesday 12-3.
Bill IR1105 requires Suffolk County businesses with trade licenses to make sure their workers have legal status and pay taxes on those workers, otherwise they would lose their licenses.
The bill, sponsored by Leg. Brian Beedenbender (D-Centereach), was immediately challenged Tuesday as it reached the floor for debate. Legislators argued it should be thrown out over a procedural matter.
Opponents took to the podium during the legislative session calling the bill racist and in violation of workers? rights.
Advocates, including Farmingville taxpayer Suzanne Grant, said they?re tired of undocumented workers benefiting from an underground economy where they don?t pay taxes.
Opponents in the Legislature say Beedenbender?s bill lacks mechanisms for enforcement. Leg. John Cooper (D-Lloyd Harbor) has introduced a similar bill with more teeth.
