Suffolk County Legislator William "Doc" Spencer was arraigned early Monday on a nine-count indictment that includes seven felonies.
The charges all stem from a 2019 indictment in which Spencer allegedly solicited a prostitute.
Prosecutors say he then filed a false police report in July 2020 saying he was a victim of extortion and that he had not solicited a prostitute.
Spencer was also arrested in October 2020 in a sting with the Drug Enforcement Administration in which he allegedly sold oxycodone to an undercover agent.
Prosecutors say that when Spencer was arrested in an Elwood parking lot, police found two oxycodone pills on him, personal lube and condoms.
"It became clear to us that Legislator Spencer was in contact with a prostitute and we began an investigation," said Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini.
Spencer pleaded not guilty. New charges were not read in court.
His attorney Antony LaPinta says nothing in the indictment was a surprise, but the other side of the story will come out.
"We have conducted our own investigation and our position is that we know of witnesses that perhaps the prosecution doesn't know about that could shed light on some facts that may be helpful in understanding what really, truly transpired here," LaPinta says.
Spencer remains a Suffolk legislator until the end of the year. He is also a medical doctor, but his attorney says he worked out a voluntary agreement not to practice until the case is resolved.
Spencer is due back in court Dec. 8.
