A Suffolk County legislator's close call on the Northern State Parkway has prompted him to create flying ice legislation.
Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Harbor) said he recently had to swerve in order to avoid flying ice from another vehicle on the parkway.
"It literally is an accident waiting to happen and I don't want to wait for someone to get killed," Cooper said.
Cooper introduced a bill that would fine a person if ice from their vehicle damages another automobile. Initial reaction has been positive.
"I think it's a very good idea because it is very dangerous, especially if you're driving with small children," Melville resident Sandra Putre said.
A public hearing is scheduled for March 20.
