Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone gave an update Monday afternoon on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bellone reported another death in the county, a woman in her 80s who passed away at St. Catherine's Hospital. The county death toll is at 13.

He also says with increased testing, cases are expected to continue to rise. The county now has at least 1,458 cases. Of those, 116 patients were hospitalized, with 38 in ICU beds as of Monday morning.

Bellone says the county has been working to fill critical shortages for personal protection equipment for hospitals, first responders and other facilities. He is reminding people to practice social distancing following the implementation of Gov. Cuomo's ban on nonessential business and gatherings.

 

Bellone noted there's been reports of groups of young people out publicly, and he says Suffolk police will continue to monitor and patrol.

Schools in the county will be closed through at least April 1.
