On the heels of an alleged fatal hate crime in Patchogue, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is urging the Long Island community to unite to end violence fueled by hate.
Levy is trying to get the message out to stop the hate on Long Island. Speaking in Farmingdale, Levy says the climate needs to change.
?How could many other people in the school know that beatings like this happened in the past and not tell a parent, not mention it to a school authority or not to a police officer,? says Levy. ?That?s what we need to change.?
News 12 Long Island will air Levy?s speech about racial tolerance tonight live at 7 p.m. News 12 Long Island?s Lea Tyrell will host a special Long Island Talks with reaction to Levy?s address and the recent hate crimes immediately after the speech.Luis Valenzuela, of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance, says Levy needs to talk about how he?s going to end violence fueled by hate and tell the world Suffolk County is a welcoming county. Levy has come under fire for his strong stance against illegal immigration. Some say his stance has made unity and understanding more difficult.
Meanwhile, Long Island residents are awaiting the grand jury indictments, expected to be handed up this week, against the seven teenagers accused in the deadly hate crime. Police say they were involved in the fatal stabbing of Hispanic immigrant Marcelo Lucero this month.
