A Suffolk County doctor is accused of stealing nearly $1 million from state Medicaid over a four-year period.
Dr. Edwardo Yambo, 70, was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree grand larceny.
New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood alleges the doctor and his company, a laboratory, cheated state Medicaid of approximately $939,000 by submitting false claims between January 2012 and November 2016. Prosecutors say Yambo would submit bills for drug testing services his company did not, or could not, do, and that it performed services that weren't medically necessary.
Newsday reports that Yambo's surrender Tuesday was negotiated and that he was released after arraignment on his own recognizance. The doctor answered the door at his Lake Grove home Tuesday night, but he wouldn't comment to News 12.
In a statement, the attorney general said, "Billing New York's Medicaid program for unnecessary or made-up procedures amounts to stealing from New York taxpayers, while wasting critical resources on which our most vulnerable neighbors depend."
Yambo could face significant prison time if convicted. He could also lose his license to practice medicine.
