The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has determined 44 of the 72 bridges owned and maintained by the county do not require repair.
The remaining 28 bridges need slight repairs that will not force their closures, according to details released by DPW this week. Some of the work includes guardrail rehabilitation and repaving. Twenty of the 28 bridges are scheduled for capital projects.
"Our infrastructure is safe," said Commissioner of Public Works Gilbert Anderson.
Anderson said the New York State Department of Transportation inspects Suffolk's bridges bi-annually on a scale from one to seven. A score of seven is awarded to a bridge in new condition.
The eight bridges not already included in the capital program cycle for repairs will be assessed in the fall, Anderson said.
Residents will be able to review reports on all bridges in New York State on Friday, when the Department of Transportation posts the information online.
