Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota says a routine narcotics investigation led investigators to an identity and car theft ring.

Spota says Jose Lopez, Felix Sanchez and Jason Gonzalez were selling drugs to undercover agents when they revealed that they were involved in other criminal activity. According to Spota, the men made fake credit cards and driver's licenses, then used them to rent luxury cars at local airports. They sold the cars after renting them for a few weeks, Spota says.

Investigators say they purchased a total of eight cars from the trio, including a Cadillac and Mercedes for less than $3,000 each.

Authorities are still investigating the total number of cars stolen and determining the buyers.

Spota described Gonzalez as the brains behind the identity theft mill. He is out on bail, while Lopez and Sanchez remain behind bars.
