Law enforcement announced the takedown of 28 alleged members of two gangs in Suffolk - the Mak Balla Family and the 9 Trey Bloods gang.

Those indicted are allegedly responsible for 19 shootings, armed robberies and drug trafficking.

Officials say they have been terrorizing Suffolk County residents.

One of the alleged crimes connected to these gangs is possession of a loaded handgun that allegedly dropped during a fight that happened at the Smith Haven Mall on Black Friday.

The gun seized from that fight was one of 11 recovered by police during the arrests of the more than two dozen people.

According to the district attorney, there was a drive-by shooting in Patchogue in 2021 that resulted in a car flipping into a car wash.

The Mak Balla family gang is responsible for 17 of the shootings over the last four years, according to the district attorney.

And while there has been gang violence, police say gun crimes are down. According to data from the District Attorney’s Office, there were 280 shootings in Suffolk in 2021. It says last year, there were 90 total shootings.
