Suffolk County will get a new area code.
State officials approved the move today because the 631 area code is running out of numbers.
Officials haven't said what the new area code will be, but it will be put into effect toward the end of 2016.
The new number will be "layed over" the old one, meaning there won't be a geographical split.
Residents will get to keep current numbers. Only new numbers will get the new area code.
However, residents will need to dial an area code even when calling the same area code.
The North American Numbering Plan, which provides basic numbering for telephone networks in the United States, Canada and some Caribbean nations, will assign Suffolk's new area code at a later date.
