Thousands of Long Islanders will soon lose access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Now, people are coming together to help.

November SNAP benefits won't be paid while the government shutdown continues.

According to a report from the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, 42,729 people rely on SNAP in NY-1 on Long Island.

In NY-2, 83,704 people rely on SNAP.

In NY-3, 28,015 people rely on SNAP.

In NY-4, 29,926 people rely on SNAP.

Struggletown BBQ in Mount Sinai is looking to help.

"Starting Saturday, anybody who comes into our store who received SNAP, they just have to show us their SNAP ID and we're going to give them a free sandwich and a drink," owner John Leonard says.

Leonard says if it continues through Thanksgiving, they will provide Thanksgiving meals to people.

"We had to do what we can, our small part to help feed some people," Leonard says.
