The Suffolk County Department of Health Service reported its sixteenth case of rabies this year.

A dead raccoon found in Amityville on Nov. 17 tested positive for rabies.

Suffolk County health officials say that to date, 10 rabid animals were found in the Amityville area, three found in Deer Park, two found in Lindenhurst and one found in Wyandanch.

According to the Suffolk County Department of Health, 15 of the rabies cases have been found in raccoons and one in a feral cat. Prior to 2025, the county had not recorded any cases since 2009.
