A white SUV took the place of a sleigh today as several Suffolk County police officers played the role of Santa Claus.

Several officers were out lifting spirits by dropping off $500 gift cards to members of the community, including some families who have been affected by crimes.

The officers work with a nonprofit group called Sixth Precinct Cops Who Care. Each year, they raise thousands of dollars for people in need, and for families who have somehow touched their lives.

Today, one of 10 donations went to the family of Karen Benjamin, a jogger who was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Mount Sinai over the summer.

Benjamin's family says the money will go toward a foundation that sponsors research for brain injuries, which is what caused her death.
