Suffolk County’s Marine Bureau officials say their goal is to keep the waterways safe as boating season ramps up.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau units patrol 500 square miles of waterways. They took News 12 along on Memorial Day for an exclusive look at their operations.
Starting this year, police will begin enforcing Brianna's Law, which requires all boaters, regardless of age, to have a boater's license to operate a vessel.
When patrolling the waterways, police say they are also looking for people boating while intoxicated.
Almost 70,000 people will make their way to the barrier beaches on the weekends this summer, so foot patrols, like those happening in Cherry Grove on Memorial Day, are welcomed by the locals.
