Suffolk County officials have announced that the latest element of their police reform plan will enhance civilian oversight.
The Human Rights Commission will begin to review complaints of police misconduct, in tandem with the Internal Affairs bureau.
As a part of the plan, people in Suffolk will be able to file a police complaint by phone or on an online platform called Oversight By Civil.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison released a statement on this saying, “Public trust and public safety are at the forefront of our mission in being a successful law enforcement agency. We welcome the addition of the Suffolk Human Rights Commission (HRC) to enhance civilian oversight of the Internal Affairs Bureau.”
Officials say they are prepared for a potential increase in submissions.
“We expanded the capacity of the human rights investigators and commission in adding additional investigators,” said Vanessa Baird-Streeter, deputy county executive of Suffolk County.
Authorities say the website will officially launch on Monday, March 6, and can be found on the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission's website.
