Suffolk considering opt-out option for pot if it becomes legal in NY
Suffolk lawmakers are considering opting out of marijuana sales in the county if the drug's recreational use is legalized statewide.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal would allow individual counties to opt out of marijuana sales.
Republican Legislator Robert Trotta is among those against selling legal pot, saying unlike a DWI stop, there is no official test to determine whether someone is under the influence of marijuana during a traffic stop, short of them getting into an accident or getting a warrant to test their blood.
Legislator Dr. William Spencer, a Democrat, says it's premature to opt out without knowing exactly what the state may pass, although he does have concerns about potential health effects of marijuana use.
Angelina Huneault, of Southampton, says she doesn't want pot sold in the county, legally or illegally.
Ron Gibbons, of Great River, says legalizing marijuana can generate large amounts of tax revenue and create jobs.
The Suffolk Legislature could vote on the opt-out measure later this month. County Executive Steve Bellone is yet to say whether he would support it.
