Officials say some improvements could be coming to the water quality in Suffolk.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released a summary of an update to the county's comprehensive water resources management plan for the first time since 1987.
The summary outlined the number one threat to public health and safety in the region, nitrogen pollution of ground and surface waters.
According to the report, nitrogen has reached critically high levels, impacting drinking water, recreational waterways and reducing wetlands.
Bellone announced new criteria developed to identify priority areas for advanced wastewater infrastructure, which are having the greatest impact on water quality and wetlands degradation.
