A total of six human cases of West Nile virus have now been confirmed on Long Island. 
Suffolk County health officials say there are three confirmed cases, one in Islip Town, one in Brookhaven and a third in Smithtown. 
Nassau County officials say three people in the Town of Hempstead have been infected with the virus. 
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. 
Doctors tell News 12 the mosquito season is winding down, but people spending time outdoors should still take precautions. 
Last year, there were 10 human cases of West Nile on Long Island.
