Students in Hempstead Village got a chance to see democracy in action Thursday during Student Government Day at Village Hall.
Hempstead Village Court Justice Ayesha Brantley swore in the participating students.
"Some of the students have suggestions on how they would change things in the village. We welcome those ideas as well," she says.
Student Jaylin Boyd was selected as "Mayor for the Day" after writing an essay in his global history class.
Joshua Miller, 14, was made chief of police. He told News 12 Long Island that he wants to do something about gang violence and drugs in the community.
Village of Hempstead Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa called Student Government Day a "wonderful opportunity for the children to feel the running of this operation."
