A recent string of fights that broke out at a park in New Hyde Park has prompted officials to enact some changes.
The hoops have been removed from the basketball court at Michael J. Nuzzi Field. And identification will now be required to enter the park, so only New Hyde Park residents will be allowed access.
The deputy mayor says confrontations haven broken out on the basketball court, sparked mostly by people who are not New Hyde Park residents, she says.
Teens without drivers licenses who want to enter the park will need to show proof of residency at Village Hall and will also need to fill out a form to get permission to use the park.
One resident who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly four decades say the situation was so bad recently that she couldn't bring her young granddaughters to the park. She says people would fight and curse.
The deputy mayor says the hoops will likely be returned to the courts in September.
