A 9/11 hero from Long Island was honored with a street renaming on what would have been his 51st birthday.
Behrendt Court in Sayville will now be known as Sgt. James P. Bast Way, dedicated to the NYPD officer who passed away from a 9/11-related illness.
Bast died in January of 2020 at just 49 years old due to melanoma.
Bast lived on the street with his wife and three kids. The Town of Islip held a ceremony Tuesday for the official unveiling.
"We're honored, it's a very fitting tribute for a great man and a great dad," said James Bast, James' son.
"We've learned so much from our dad, lessons in life, so looking at that sign every day will remind us of that true meaning," added Thomas Bast, also James' son.
