Friends, family and former colleagues came together Saturday to unveil a special tribute to a fallen firefighter.
Davis Avenue was renamed as "Joseph Sanford Jr. Avenue" in honor of the former Inwood Fire Department chief.
Sanford Jr. responded to a house fire in Woodmere in December 2014 where he fell through a hole in the first floor into the basement. He died days later from his injuries.
"The fire was very hot and burnt a hole in the floor immediately and Joe was not the kind of guy to hold back. He was an aggressive fireman," says Chief Frank Parise.
Sanford Jr. dedicated his life to volunteering for the Inwood Fire Department for more than 20 years.
The Sanford family still lives on the newly dedicated block. They say the sign will be a reminder of the legacy he left behind.
