In times of social distancing, a mostly forgotten business is making a major comeback -- drive-in movies.
Towns across Long Island are hosting pop-up drive-in theaters to give residents a safe and family friendly activity during the pandemic.
Coach Meeting House in Oyster Bay will be showing "The Goonies" at its first event this Saturday at 8 p.m. The event is already sold out.
"We wanted to provide an experience for the community where they could be social, normal but socially distant at the same time," says Coach Meeting House owner Rustan Lundstrum. "And I thought a drive-in movie theater kind of solved that problem."
In Sayville, where the hamlet's movie theater remains shuttered due to the pandemic, officials are planning a pop-up theater for June. They say the location will be announced shortly.
In the Town of North Hempstead, residents will be able to park their cars at several venues every weekend this summer to enjoy a movie.
"They will be socially distanced in their cars, we're not putting cars one next to the other and they'll be able to have a nice family night out without feeling they're in any danger," says North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth.
