More than 16 million Americans have lost their jobs since last month and filing for unemployment benefits in New York has not been easy.

However, the state’s revamped website for unemployment filing went live at 7:30 a.m.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office says the state Department of Labor was inundated with calls and their system crashed. A total of 800,000 New Yorkers have applied for unemployment insurance.

"They're going to be reaching out directly to the people, so they don't have to go through this infuriating process of calling and getting busy signals and thereby collapsing the system," says Melissa DeRose, secretary to Gov. Cuomo.

The governor's office also says if there are any issues with online applications, workers will call you back within 72 hours. They have 1,000 employees who will be working the phones.

Officials say benefits will be retroactive from the moment you became unemployed.
