Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced Thursday that a 42-year-old Nassau County man has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Curran spoke during a news conference about the case. She says investigators are looking into the man's routine and who he may have come into contact with.
According to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the man had underlying medical conditions.
Officials would not say what the condition was and released very little information about the man. Officials say the man has not traveled recently, and at this point they don't how he contracted the virus.
The man is being treated at NYU Winthrop Hospital.
Winthrop Hospital released a statement saying, "NYU Winthrop Hospital is currently treating a patient for coronavirus. The patient is currently in isolation, in an area of the hospital where protective measures help ensure the safety of staff and other patients. After discharge from the hospital, he will be advised to self-quarantine for the period of time recommended under CDC guidelines. The patient met the most recent CDC recommendations for testing, which were just implemented. NYU Langone Health has been preparing since the first case was announced in China. In addition, we are working with the state and county Departments of Health to identify anyone else who may have been exposed to this patient. We also remain committed to ensure the health and well-being of our staff, patients, and visitors. Out of an abundance of caution, and if necessary, we may ask particular staff members to self-quarantine for the recommended period of time. We also will monitor them regularly, even as they remain asymptomatic, following all standard infection control guidelines."
Nassau County has also set up a coronavirus hotline. Anyone with questions or concerns can call 516-227-9570.
Long Islanders have mixed reactions to the latest news.
"I am worried," says Mark Minsky, of Syosset. "I just canceled a trip last night to Paris."
Monte Brown, of Hicksville, says he's not nervous yet. Brown says he's just going to be cautious.

Cuomo says as more and more people are tested the number of cases will go up, but he says that is no reason to panic.
"When this is all over, we will have dozens and dozens and dozens of cases," says Cuomo.
