A Southampton High School senior was killed Sunday by a suspected drunk driver in while on a trip to El Salvador.
Ana Castro, 18, was visiting her aunt in the Central American country. Her brother, Fredy, says she was heading to the beach when a drunk driver slammed into the car in which she was riding.
Fredy Castro says his sister, who was born and raised on Long Island, would have been the first member of their family to attend college. She died just three days after her 18th birthday.
Castro and his family started a GoFundMe page to help bring Ana's body back for burial in Hampton Bays. By Friday evening, the page raised more than $22,000, surpassing its $18,000 goal.
"I really appreciate what the community has been doing," Fredy Castro said. "I've been trying to stay strong for my parents, but it gets very overwhelming."
He hopes his sister's body can be brought back to the states on Jan. 3 for a funeral on Jan. 4, but he said he's still working on it.
Southampton Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Dyno issued a statement saying, "We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones who are grieving during this very difficult time. Support services will be available to students and staff that require such upon their return to school on Jan. 2."
