A wing in Northport Middle School is now closed to students for the rest of the school year.
News 12 has reported that fumes from petroleum-based materials in a storeroom seeped into a classroom in the building's K-wing in April.
Air quality testing found levels of four volatile organic compounds in the air that exceeded air quality standards. A total of two dozen hazardous substances were found.
Officials say they closed the wing "in the spirit of using an abundance of caution." Some parents, however, say their kids have been complaining of headaches.
News 12's request for an interview with the superintendent was denied, but district officials say more tests are being performed and have not yet been completed. They say the wing could reopen in the fall.
