A young woman from Long Island was killed Wednesday afternoon in a horseback riding accident.
Police say Rebecca Weissbard, 22, of Manorville, was thrown from her horse during a competition in Ulster County.
Officials say the young woman was jumping hurdles when her horse hit a pole and landed on top of her. Her mother was the first one by her side after the incident occurred.
"Becca was fearless, crazy, excited, passionate," said her mother Lynne Weissbard. "She was just an explosion of energy."
Her parents say she was a fierce competitor who loved horses.
"She was our only child," said her father, Eric Weissbard. "All of your hopes and dreams are just gone. All you have are memories."
A candlelight vigil is being held in her memory at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sundance Stables in Manorville, which her family owns.
