A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until noon today. Wind chills are below 0 degrees which can cause frostbite on exposed skin.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Sunday morning and will remain in effect until Monday evening. Hazardous driving conditions are expected during this time and wind and snow will reduce visibility to less than 1/4 a mile at times.

WEEKEND SNOWSTORM UPDATE: News 12 is still forecasting 8 to 14 inches of snow Sunday into Monday, the highest snowfall since the January 29, 2022 blizzard on Long Island. The highest totals will likely be on the north shore.

The storm will begin as all snow with frigid temperatures between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday.

Snow intensity will increase through the morning, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour expected for several hours. Easterly winds will also strengthen, with gusts exceeding 30 mph, leading to near-whiteout conditions at times during the afternoon. Travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly.

Snow is likely to transition to a period of sleet sometime after 4 p.m. Sunday, resulting in major travel impacts Sunday and potentially into next week. With snow and icy ground in place and high temperatures remaining well below freezing, little melting is expected through much of next week.

BEFORE THE STORM: Today is clear but very cold. The record lowest high temperature for the date is 19F in Islip. Our forecast high for today is only 18 degrees. Wind chills will make it feel like the single digits all day.
